I had a family ask if they could pay a caregiver directly instead of going through the agency. They said it’s to “save money on taxes.” How do you handle these situations?
That’s a major red flag and a situation you’ll want to avoid at all costs. If they’re trying to bypass legal and ethical payment structures now, chances are they’ll create even bigger problems down the road.
LOL, yeah. If they’re asking to go around the system, they’ll probably cut corners elsewhere too. Say no, politely but firmly:
“Unfortunately, we can’t allow direct payments, as it violates our policies and caregiver protections.”
That’s what I told them, but they kept pushing. “Other agencies allow it.”
They’re bluffing. And if another agency is doing it, that’s illegal. These families don’t realize they could get sued if something happens. No workers’ comp, no liability protection… total mess.
Also, side payments usually mean wage theft. They’ll start underpaying the caregiver, making excuses, delaying payments. It’s bad for everyone.
So I should just refuse and move on?
Yup. Some clients aren’t worth the headache. Stick with ethical clients who respect your business.
